Utility Data Repeater: Mount Coolum

Utility Data Repeater: Mount Coolum

SPS Energy was able to design a system that satisfied the tough criteria, and devise a method to lift the necessary equipment onto site quickly, and at reasonable cost.

The client approached SPS Energy with an urgent problem due to the imminent loss of grid supply when existing power lines supplying their telemetry repeater were to be removed under an order from owner of the property across which the power line traversed.

Loss of data was not an acceptable outcome as service delivery and quality management was predicated on real time reporting.

To further complicate matters, the telemetry site was located on top of a small mountain surrounded by National Park, with no access other than by foot.

As a standalone installation requiring high reliability and autonomy, large batteries were specified to overcome prolonged overcast weather.

SPS Energy was able to design a system that satisfied the tough criteria, and devise a method to lift the necessary equipment onto site quickly, and at reasonable cost.

The installation was prefabricated and packaged to ride in a container slung below a Squirrel helicopter for the short flight to the installation site.  The installation team had to leg it up the hill, but were well prepared for the drop when it came.

Several hours later, the helicopter returned to collect tools, packaging and equipment made redundant after connection to the new supply.

The repeater was of invaluable benefit during severe weather events in South East Queensland during 2010 and 2011.
