The client approached SPS Energy desiring an energy solution to the crippling power accounts being received each quarter.

Investigation revealed that the site had a three phase peak tariff connection, remote metering by the entrance, and a very long underground connection across an easement to the point of attachment to the grid.

A large air conditioning load, three phase pool heat pump, irrigation and mechanical workshop resulted in a large solar PV system specification coupled with wiring losses and a network reluctant to permit installation of a system size sufficient to achieve the desired outcomes.

Some of the problems were overcome by relocating the metering to a discrete location under the residence. The move enabled the opportunity to transfer larger non essential loads to off peak tariffs without loss of amenity or extensive new cable runs which would have required trenching across driveways and established gardens.

The Solar PV generator was mounted on custom frames to achieve optimized north facing orientation and the power delivered out on all three phases using one three phase inverter, which was able to satisfy network demands and handle the PV specification required to deliver sufficient energy to shift the power account close to cost neutral.

The client was pleased, the network satisfied and visual amenity of the property retained without adversely affecting the pay back periods significantly.
